Mozambique’s Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC) accused 12 people of embezzling a total of 123 million meticais (€1.6 million) from the Treasury, the entity’s source told Lusa on Friday.
This is a group of seven staff from the Treasury, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and five other people, including officials from a bank in Tete province, central Mozambique, a source from the GCCC’s communication department told Lusa.
The group allegedly embezzled more than 123 million meticais in an orchestrated scheme between June 2016 and June 2018, claiming domestic state debts were being paid.
“These are staff from the Treasury who were registered with the e-SISTAFE [processing system] and who had the task of making payments of internal debts,” explained the GCCC source.
The scheme was dismantled through a complaint from within the Treasury.
The accusation was referred to the Judicial Court of Maputo and out of 12 people, five are in pre-trial detention, one is on the run and the rest are free.
