Train-the-Trainers programme: Closing ceremony - EUMAM Mozambique
Screen grab: Sala da Paz
Speaking on the ‘Mozambique in Concert’ show on Sunday (11-11), presenter Gabriel Xavier da Barca Júnior, who is also a Frelimo deputy, President of the Mozambican Boxing Federation (FMB) and chairman of the TV Sucesso channel, revealed he had received death threats.
“I thought it would be temporary, but with each passing day, the pressure of the threats gets greater. I don’t know if it’s real or if it’s a form of intimidation. I don’t know for what reason, because I am nothing, I have nothing. What I am … this son that you see who lives to help and save his people. I’m worried? Yes. I’m scared? No, because in the book of Matthew 10, 28 to 33, the Bible says ‘Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul’,” Gabriel Junior said.
He went on to quote, “As the Lord says: ‘Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. If you honour me before men, I will honour you before the Father (…)’.”
Continuing, Gabriel Júnior revealed that the case has already been forwarded to the judicial authorities, who he hopes will investigate and find the people behind the threats to the presenter and altruist also known as “Son of the People”.
Meanwhile, during the recent post-election tensions, Gabriel Júnior’s TV channel claims to have broadcast without censorship all the episodes of the “shameful process”, irritating some comrades to the point of them removing him from WhatsApp groups.
In addition to these threats, some of Gabriel Júnior’s collaborators have revealed that they are also being pressured by figures linked to the current party in power not to interview figures who are uncomfortable with the regime, or address issues critical of the Frelimo party.
However, according to Integrity, TV Sucesso has, among national television channels, been the only one to promote inclusive debates and open their doors to defenders of causes from all social, political, cultural and economic segments, approaches made devoid of any pressure.
