An armed attack in central Mozambique on Tuesday killed a truck driver in Gondola district, near the EN6 the main road in the region, witnesses and authorities told Lusa.
Several shots were fired at the truck’s windscreen, hitting the driver who was driving alone on the Gôndola-Inchope route at 05:00 (03:00 in Lisbon).
“The truck had overtaken me when I was picking up passengers and shortly after I found it off the road. I thought it was an accident, but then we realised it was an attack and we pulled back”, Samuel Lourenço, who carries passengers on the Chimoio-Inchope section told Lusa.
Inchope is the point where the EN1, which crosses the country from north to south, and the EN6, a strategic corridor from Beira to Zimbabwe, cross.
Police confirmed today’s attack again attributed the killing to the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) and its group of dissidents, the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta, which has a parallel direction to the main opposition party which has demanded since July changes to the peace agreement signed with the government.
“When the police learned of the incident, they immediately went to the scene, guaranteeing the circulation of people and goods and intensifying operations on the ground to identify and arrest perpetrators” said Mateus Mindu, spokesman for security force, at a press conference.
The attack occurred close to a police post and affected the circulation of vehicles in the main corridor linking the port of Beira, on the Indian Ocean, to the African countries of the interior.
This is the first attack to take place on the EN6 this year.
