The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $450,000 (approximately 29 million meticais) to support emergency aid efforts in response to Tropical Cyclone Chido, which devastated parts of Mozambique on 15 December.
According to a press release from the U.S. Embassy in Mozambique, the critical funding will help address the urgent needs of affected populations in Cabo Delgado province, focusing on shelter, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
One of the grants will be implemented by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), while other rapid response actions will be carried out by CARE International.
Additionally, the same press release notes that other USAID humanitarian partners are mobilising existing resources to meet immediate needs.
Tropical Cyclone Chido brought heavy rains and strong winds, resulting in loss of life, injuries, and significant destruction of homes and infrastructure.
Initial reports, according to the document, indicate that the greatest human and material losses occurred in the southern part of Cabo Delgado province and surrounding areas.
Assessments are currently underway to determine the full impact of the disaster, and the United States Government will continue to work closely with the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction to coordinate the cyclone response.
The U.S. Ambassador, Peter H. Vrooman, emphasised the importance of swift action to assist those affected by Cyclone Chido.
“The United States Government recognises the enormous challenges faced by those affected and wants to reaffirm our solidarity. Our assistance will provide vital aid to the people most impacted by the cyclone, helping to alleviate human suffering and support recovery efforts,” stated Ambassador Vrooman, as quoted in the press release.
The United States Government remains committed to supporting Mozambique in this emergency response and strengthening the country’s resilience to future natural disasters.
