Three individuals are being held at the 1st Police Station in Ressano Garcia on suspicion of vehicle theft in South Africa.
The two Mozambicans and a South African were detained by Maputo province Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) at the Ressano Garcia border post on Saturday driving two vehicles, one a Jeep with diplomatic corps registration plates, and the other Toyota Hilux D4D, both from South Africa.
“The individuals were travelling in two vehicles,” SERNIC spokesman Henrique Mendes said. “We detected irregularities: on approaching the driver of the first vehicle, it was noticed that the car had been vandalised on the inside, and when we requested the documents, the characteristics presented did not correspond to that type of registration. It was at that moment that it was noticed that the vehicles were of illicit provenance.”
“SERNIC contacted the South African police in order to clarify the legality of the vehicles, and it was found that one was stolen. We are working to assess the legality of the other vehicle,” Mendes said.
