The trial of three Rapid Intervention Unit police force (UIR) agents who allegedly raped a 22-year-old woman in the Mafalala neighbourhood, Maputo city, has begun this Wednesday, in the 39th section of the Judicial Court of Maputo.
The alleged assault took place on August 9, 2020. The police authorities detained the defendants, now assigned to the Brigada Montada in the city of Maputo, a few days later.
At the time, the UIR distanced itself from its agents’ alleged acts, and pledged that the three would be punished in an exemplary manner.
In addition to the criminal case, disciplinary proceedings are also underway, with possible expulsion the most imminent decision to be taken.
