A collision involving two freight trains in Meconta district, about 80 km from the city of Nampula, at around 4:30 a.m. today, has brought the Nacala Corridor to a standstill, O País reports.
There is still no official information, but local sources report that the drivers were evacuated by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
Also according to one account, both trains were travelling in the same direction (Nacala to Nampula), but some wagons of the front train, which was carrying containers and agricultural fertilisers, became detached, probably without the driver being aware of it.
It was with these stationary wagons that the following train collided.
The Nacala Corridor, a 912 km rail line from the coal mines in Tete to Nacala-à-Velha, is licensed to Nacala Logistics.
It is not known how long it will take for circulation on the line to resume.
