Circulation of vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons on the bridge over the Limpopo River, at the entrance to the city of Xai-Xai in Gaza, will be restricted from Wednesday for resurfacing.
This is because the surfacing material is “quite sensitive”, said Américo Dimande, director general of the National Road Administration (ANE), explaining that the circulation of heavier vehicles may have “disastrous” implications in terms of deformation.
The work will last 14 days. For the first week, vehicles up to 3.5 tons will use a single lane, passing in alternate directions. The following week, the operation will switch to the other lane.
Vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons will have to use alternative routes, such as Chissano-Chibuto-Chongoene, for the duration of the works.
Américo Dimande said on Sunday, during a visit monitoring the work in progress, that the intervention on the bridge is part of the ANE’s policy of road infrastructure rehabilitation and maintenance.
He noted that the work on the Xai-Xai bridge was taking place 27 years after the first bridge collapsed.
During the rehabilitation, Dimande said, additional safety elements have been introduced at each end of the bridge, and a general inspection of the entire infrastructure carried out to determine ongoing interventions, estimated at almost 273 million meticais.
