The new Tourism Law approved by the Council of Ministers requires tourist resorts to accept the metical in payment for their services.
The proposal arises due to accounts of refusal to accept the national currency in some tourist establishments, especially those close to beaches and borders, Noticias says.
According to the Deputy Director of Tourism, Gisela Malauene, some such establishments prefer the South African rand or the US dollar. They are not to be prevented from accepting foreign currency, “but at no time should they decline the metical for payments in Mozambique”.
Another measure is that revenues from resorts and the like are to be collected through accounts at banks operating in Mozambique.
The goal is to contain capital flight, Malauene says, with a joint approach to be developed with the Tax Authority and the Bank of Mozambique to ensure the repatriation of currency outside the country.
The new legislation also includes the decree that approves the regulations for Travel Agencies and Tourist Information Professionals.
