The Total-led Mozambique LNG Project, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, is supporting the national response against COVID-19. The support consists in the rehabilitation of a fifty (50) bed ward at the Pemba Provincial Hospital for the isolation of patients from COVID-19, in the provision of one (1) tent to be used as an isolation ward for patients with COVID-19 at the Distrital Hospital of Palma, and the installation of one (1) new PCR laboratory – 45m2 container with five divisions – for testing COVID-19, in Pemba, equipped with complete laboratory and office equipment.
Total and its partners will also provide five (5) ventilators and ten (10) infrared thermometers for hospitals in Cabo Delgado, and various personal protective equipment for hospitals in Pemba and Palma, including a first delivery of fifty thousand (50,000) masks for hospital use in the country. The support also includes twelve thousand (12,000) sample collection kits for testing Covid-19 for the National Institute of Health, as well as reagents and consumables to reinforce the testing capacity of the same laboratory.
Total, through its oil products commercialization business unit, present in Mozambique for about thirty years, will also supply fuel to public ambulances throughout the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Total and its partners will continue to support the ongoing humanitarian aid program through the provision of a vessel to transport, from Pemba to Mocímboa da Praia, materials for the reconstruction of bridges damaged by the weather, fuel supplies, generators, food and other essential goods following the storms that occurred in last December in the Province of Cabo Delgado whose effects continue to condition the movement of people and goods.
The Country Chair of Total in Mozambique and Vice-President of the Mozambique LNG project, Ronan Bescond, stated that “We have already started to receive some of this material that had been ordered some time ago and in the coming weeks we will receive the other that we are going to send to the destination. In view of this global pandemic that also affects Mozambique and our company, we must live up to our values of solidarity and the duty to contribute to the national response against COVID-19. The health and well-being of our employees and the communities where we operate are an imperative”.
Bescond also stated: “In close coordination with the health authorities, to whom we extend our thanks for the support received, we continue to work on the implementation of our COVID-19 management plan, which includes a rigorous testing, quarantine and disinfection program. This is the best approach to make the Afungi project site virus free and ensure we are well-placed to return to work when the effects of this global pandemic begin to ease.”
“We would like to continue to build a successful LNG project in Mozambique, which will bring benefits to all stakeholders, thus contributing to the sustainable development of Mozambique”, added Bescond.
