The French oil company Total has today expressed its belief in the “secure execution” of the gas exploration project in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, where groups classified as a terrorist threat have been carrying out armed attacks since October 2017.
“The Government is working very well to create, as far as possible, the best conditions for the secure execution of the work,” said Arnaud Breuillac, Total’s president of exploration and production, after a meeting with the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, as part of a visit to Mozambique.
“Security is the responsibility of the Government and we are confident in the work that is being done,” added Breuillac.
The incursions by armed groups in the last two and a half years in that province have already killed at least 700 people and a humanitarian crisis affecting about 211,000 residents.
Total leads the consortium that will explore Area 1 of the Rovuma basin in northern Mozambique in 2024.
