Mozambique’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security says it will vaccinate about two million cattle this year under a programme to prevent and control the spread of diseases such as anthrax, nodular dermatosis and foot-and-mouth. The ministry said on Wednesday that the programme was in compliance with the mandatory vaccination schedule whose campaign for immunization of cattle runs from April.
The ministry’s Department of Veterinary Medicine and the provincial directorates of agriculture and food security will lead the process, held annually to protect livestock and public health.
“To this end, we call upon all farmers to take their animals to dip tanks, animal treatment centres or other places of concentration for cattle in their respective areas and bring books of registration of animals to ensure that they covered by this protection,” national veterinary director Américo da Conceição told journalists on Wednesday.
He revealed that the department would also be vaccinating dogs and cats against rabies to safeguard public health.
