Mozambique’s Ministry of Health began a poliomyelitis and measles vaccination campaign in Beira, Sofala province, on Monday, aiming to reach 83,553 children, the local press there has reported.
Beira’s administrator, João Oliveira, is quoted by Mozambican daily newspaper Noticias as saying that the campaign will also involve the vaccination of 371,365 children against lymphatic filariasis.
The operation includes mobile teams which will urge the population to join the campaign, to be carried out in health centres, schools, markets and churches.
The city of Beira was the hardest hit by March’s Cyclone Idai, which killed 603 people. Two weeks later, the north of the country was hit by Cyclone Kenneth, which killed a further 43 people.
