Mozambique’s National Aeronautics School (ENA) will resume training of civilian pilots in early 2019, Transport Minister Carlos Mesquita said on Friday.Mesquita said the government is currently discussing with potential partners from Canada and the United States to resume project of the school that was closed 12 years ago due operational challenges.
Currently, players in Mozambique’s aviation sector have to send their pilots to other countries for training.
“Sending trainees outside the country brings additional costs for companies and, of course, for the users of their services,” Mesquita said.
According to the minister, training a single pilot outside Mozambique is costing the country’s flag carrier, LAM, between US$65,000 and US$75,000 a year.
Besides the problem of additional costs, the outsourcing of pilot and aviation technician training to other countries has the added challenge of lack of a common yardstick in terms of skills acquired.
Founded in 1980, ENA is the only school for training pilots and aviation technicians in Mozambique.
