The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) plans to provide US$69 million to Mozambique to strengthen its immunisation programme, Mozambican President Daniel Chapo announced following a visit to Switzerland.
“Another significant gain from our working visit to the Swiss Confederation is the express guarantee from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, which continues the strategic partnership it maintains with our country, and this time will financially support us through a package of around US$69 million,” said Chapo.
Speaking at a press conference marking the end of his three-day visit to Geneva on Tuesday, where he met with several international organisations and entities, Chapo said the funds would support the implementation of activities set out in the government strategy recently approved by the Council of Ministers.
He also announced an additional US$41.7 million in support from the Global Fund to help implement HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria control programmes, as well as to strengthen national health systems.
“Some of this is already underway and has been running for several years, but it continues; therefore, this fund will keep supporting Mozambique, which is very important for us,” he emphasised.
During the three-day visit to Switzerland — which preceded his state visit to Zambia that began on Wednesday and runs until Friday — Chapo also met with business leaders to showcase Mozambique’s openness to foreign investment.
