The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov, plans to visit Mozambique to closely monitor developments in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
The exact date of this visit has not yet been confirmed, but Voronkov aims to directly observe the recent progress made in combating terrorism in the country.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, who revealed that the UN official seeks better coordination in counter-terrorism efforts.
Verónica Macamo spoke at a press conference about her visit to the United Nations, as part of Mozambique’s Presidency of the Security Council, where she led a session on the Role of Women and Youth in Peace and Security.
On this occasion, the Mozambican foreign minister argued that young people and women can play a fundamental role in conflict prevention, hoping that these and other shared ideas will gain traction within the UN.
In addition to the Open Ministerial Debate on the Role of Women and Youth in Peace and Security, Mozambique promoted a debate this month on the protection of civilians in conflict and another on strengthening the African State in addressing issues of peace, security, and development.
Until tomorrow, Mozambique will hold its second monthly presidency of the Security Council.
