The Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Cabo Delgado may open an investigation into the death of Andre Hanekon, the main suspect in the armed attacks in the area, should the autopsy report not confirm that the victim died due to illness.
“Given that he lost his life as an accused and detained, and according to the law, we requested the report of legal medicine, which has already been officially requested to the Hospital, where he lost his life, to ascertain the real causes of his death, which will determine the steps that the Public Prosecution Service can follow,” said Armando Wilson, spokesman for the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Cabo Delgado, at a press conference, but could not state whether or not a crime was committed in the death of the South African businessman.
Since his arrest, Hanekon was in poor health and made several visits to the Pemba Provincial Hospital.
However, the Prosecutor’s Office was unaware of the health status of the defendant awaiting trial in the maximum security prison.
“We were surprised to learn of his death at Pemba Provincial Hospital because, since the prosecution stage, we did not have information on the defendant’s clinical condition,” said Wilson.
According to information, Hanekon was admitted to the Pemba Provincial Hospital on Saturday, January 19, in a critical state and died three days later, allegedly from an illness although medical experts are yet to confirm.
After the family, the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Cabo Delgado was the first state institution to officially confirm the death of Hanekon, one of the main defendants in the armed attacks in Cabo Delgado.
