Tmcel-Mozambique Telecom will provide the land for the construction of new facilities for the Faculty of Engineering of Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), thanks to a memorandum of understanding recently signed between the two institutions.
The plot on Avenida de Moçambique in Maputo has an area of 50,539 square metres, and will house classrooms, laboratories and libraries, among other facilities.
As part of the memorandum, the parties will establish a cooperation agreement under which Tmcel will take on Faculty of Engineering graduates in computer technologies as interns.
This agreement represents the ultimate expression of Tmcel’s corporate social responsibility actions, expressing the belief that investment in education is essential for the development of a country in all its dimensions and is a crucial factor in building a more prosperous and fair society, which benefits not only the present generations, but also those to come.
Speaking after the signing of the memorandum, the chairman of the Tmcel Management Committee, Mahomed Adamo Mussá, stressed that the provision of the space is in recognition of the role of Eduardo Mondlane University in training professionals and, therefore, in the development of the country.
“UEM has trained technicians, engineers and doctors, some of whom are now in this company. However, we feel that the market dynamics are completely different today in terms of technologies. Therefore, we believe that the university should also make a change in this area so that it can train professionals who can keep up with this dynamic. It is in this sense that we thought it was convenient and useful to give UEM the space to build the future facilities of the Faculty of Engineering,” he said.
For Mahomed Adamo Mussá, a strong university constitutes a base for the training of young people who are prepared for the challenges of the market, therefore “we hope that UEM continues to be that incubator that trains the best engineers, who contribute to the development of the country”.
“We have incorporated education as one of the main pillars and areas of action in the field of our socially responsible actions. Therefore, we recognize the importance of this partnership for the development of the country and we are aware that we must work together, thus contributing to a quality education system, accessible and inclusive for all. Only in this way can we achieve a more promising and sustainable future, focusing our social responsibility on education,” he concluded.
In turn, the rector of UEM, Manuel Guilherme Júnior, said that Tmcel’s gesture would help improve teaching conditions at the Faculty of Engineering. “This is the best way to ensure the training of the next generations. Of people who will contribute to the development of this country,” he said.
“UEM has a Faculty of Engineering with a long history of training but, for various reasons, the space it has are is longer sufficient. Tmcel has taken on a great responsibility, which will make higher education better than we currently have, through the Faculty of Engineering,” he highlighted.
The rector of UEM praised Tmcel for its stance, saying it was “always good when the productive sector understood that it does not need to just wait for the end of the process to have the staff it needs, but decided instead to be part of the training process. There are other ways to support, in this specific case by providing much-needed space, giving the university and the faculty the dignity they deserve”.
