There have been at least three terrorist attacks over the past few days in the locality of Miangalewa, and two neighbouring villages, in Muidumbe district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, according to a report in Monday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”.
Villagers who had been returning to Miangalewa after earlier jihadist attacks have been forced to flee again.
The latest clashes began in Litapata village last Thursday. The following day, the terrorists struck Mandava village, and on Saturday they attacked Miangalewa itself.
According to local sources cited by “Mediafax”, a patrol from the village militia spotted the terrorists in Litapata. In the ensuing exchange of fire, five jihadists were killed and one managed to flee.
The men who attacked Mandava, about 15 kilometres from Litapata, appear to have been a separate terrorist group. One villager, who was picking oranges at the time of the raid, was shot in his hand, but was able to make his way to the medical post in the nearby village of Miteda.
The terrorists attacked Miangalewa on Saturday night, and clashed with the militia. One militiaman was killed and two were injured.
Before these raids, about 500 displaced people had returned to the Miangalewa area. They are now fleeing again, mostly to the town of Macomia, which had sheltered them for the previous two years.
