The Mozambican Interior Ministry has suspended three traffic police officers following a road accident that caused the deaths of 11 people along National Road Number 10 (EN10), which links Nicoadala district to Quelimane city, in the central province of Zambezia.
Seven other people were seriously injured as a result of the accident, which took place on Saturday.
Over the last month, the Interior Ministry also suspended 20 police officers who somehow failed to spot gross irregularities in vehicles and drivers involved in traffic accidents that claimed 35 lives in the southern province of Gaza.
In a statement, the Ministry states that a team of three traffic police officers scheduled to work on 12-13 September at the Tecani Checkpoint on EN10 has been suspended. In addition to the suspension, a commission of inquiry was established to investigate the allegations related to the accident.
“Police authorities, accompanied by teams from the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO), the National Road Administration (ANE), and the fire brigade (SENSAP), went to the scene to assist the victims, who are currently receiving medical care at Quelimane Central Hospital”, reads the note.
The Interior Ministry calls on police officers to increase signage on critical stretches of national highways, encouraging drivers to drive educationally “for road safety. We also recommend strict compliance with technical inspections for passenger and freight vehicles, and we express our condolences to the victims and their families.”
According to the authorities, 59 people have lost their lives between August and September this year as a result of road accidents.
