In order to increase the country’s water storage capacity, three large, new dams will be built in Mozambique, and two others will benefit from rehabilitation works. Studies and the mobilisation of funds are already underway.
The new dams are in Macuje, Rapale district, Nampula province; Muera, in the Planalto dos Marcondes, in Cabo Delgado; and Locomue, in Lichinga, in Niassa province.
‘Notícias’ has learned that the Locomue dam in Niassa will be built using funds from the state budget, and the Muera dam, Cabo Delgado, through financing from partners. Mobilisation of resources for the construction of the Macuje dam in Nampula province is currently underway.
Simultaneously, 80 small dams and ten excavated reservoirs will be built to ensure uninterrupted supply of water to the population, especially in rural areas.
Carlos Mesquita, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, said that the focus in the water supply and sanitation sector was on increasing coverage through the construction and/or rehabilitation of more than 6,000 water sources.
The minister further announced that around 160 water supply systems in rural and urban areas would be built to reinforce supply, increasing storage capacity by more than 520 million cubic meters.
According to Mesquita, it is also planned to extend the hydrological forecast time from three to six days.
“Even more important is to consolidate cooperation in the area of joint use of water resources through the signing of agreements with countries with which we share river basins. This is already underway, and we believe it will yield results,” he said.
Mesquita also stressed the importance of disseminating and implementing the Law on Public Water Supply and Sanitation Services for improving the efficiency, sustainability and quality of services and moving towards universal coverage.
