Three more individuals have been arrested in the case of the kidnapping of a Chinese businessman in Beira city on 23 May. Two of the detainees are Mozambicans and one is a Chinese national. They had initially managed to escape during the freeing of the victim in the Cerãmica neighbourhood area.
“We managed to detain three more members of the same gang, one of whom is of Chinese nationality and supposedly handled the group’s logistics,” Alfeu Sitoe, spokesman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Sofala, told a press conference.
The new detentions bring the number of people allegedly involved in the abduction of the Chinese transport sector businessman to five.
The details of the businessman’s release are not known.

Speaking to journalists after his release, the businessman, whose face was bruised, presumably by his captors, said that he was kidnapped outside a bank and driven to the hideout.
Of the detainees, two are security guards who lent a service weapon to a man allegedly related to the Chinese detainee for the commission of the crime, for which service they are supposed to have received 5,000 meticais.
