Three alleged robbers died in the early hours of Friday after being shot by police during a chase in Maputo, a source from the corporation told Lusa.
The group of robbers ordered a taxi at around 02:00 a.m., then forcing the driver at gun-point into the trunk of the car with his mouth gagged and tied up, said Leonel Muchina, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Maputo city.
The taxi driver managed to open the trunk of the car and fled into a nearby bakery, from where he called his brother. The pair then reported the theft to the police, Muchina said.
“Unfortunately, during this chase there were intense exchanges of fire, resulting in the death of the members of the gang,” Muchina said, reporting that the shooting took place on Maputo’s Avenida Eduardo Mondlane.
According to Muchina, the police recovered three firearms from the robbers, who already had police records and had even served sentences for the same type of crime.
Police have urged taxi drivers to be more vigilant when responding to calls at night, especially in the middle of the week.
