Mozambique: Defence forces foil insurgent attack on Macomia

Three defendants have been sentenced to 30 years in prison by Maputo City Judicial Court for their involvement in the kidnapping of a 56-year-old Mozambican citizen in July, 2023.
The court also imposed a two-year fine at the rate of five minimum wages on co-defendants Nelson Tamele, Jerónimo Bila and Joana Maria Macuácua, as well as three million meticais in compensation for the crimes of kidnapping, criminal association, possession of prohibited weapons and damages.
The assets of the convicted individuals – three vehicles, five mobile phones and a firearm – were declared forfeit to the state.
The events of case number 108/GCCCOT/2023 took place in Maputo on July 20, 2023, when the defendants kidnapped Manuel Manoj Jasvantilal.
The victim was held captive in the Malhampsene neighbourhood, Matola municipality, from where he was rescued on July 25, 2023, by SERNIC, who at the time arrested the three persons now tried and convicted.
