Three community projects, designed by grassroots community organisations to reduce deforestation and manage natural resources sustainably under the Dedicated Grant Mechanism for Local Communities (DGM) in Cabo Delgado’s Macomia, Quissanga and Ibo districts, have been removed from the list of beneficiaries because of political insecurity in the form of attacks by terrorist groups, Noticias reports.
According to DGM Mozambique’s Milton Chauque, 15 community-based projects were selected from the 287 submitted in Cabo Delgado and Zambézia provinces, where the US$4.5 million World Bank-financed initiative is being implemented.
Insecurity in the above mentioned districts however has led to the withdrawal of three proposals, bringing the number of beneficiaries down to twelve.
In Cabo Delgado, a consortium of community-based organisations in the districts of Ancuabe, Metuge and Montepuez was selected to receive an undisclosed amount of DGM funds within the next few days.
According to Chauque, organisations mostly submitted income-generating projects in the poultry sector, with just one association opting for cereals.
“Everything is ready for all organisations to benefit from the financing,” Chauque said.
The Mozambican government, through the Sustainable Development Fund (FDS), contracted the World Fund for Nature (WWF) as executive agency for the implementation of the initiative.
