Two Mozambicans and one Congolese man are being held for assisting and facilitating the illegal immigration of seven Congolese detained at the Kilometre 18 checkpoint in Tete’s Changara district .
Migration Service’s spokeswoman Amélia Direito said in Tete yesterday that the two Mozambicans involved were motorcycle taxi drivers transporting the immigrants, while the Congolese received them and guided them to South Africa.
“We encourage carriers to demand documentation from passengers, especially when they are of foreign nationality, so as not to be involved in the facilitation of clandestine migration,” Direito urged.
She said that immigrants usually use private vehicles, but, due to meticulous work at checkpoints, new strategies, such as using motorcycle taxis, were always being adopted. She assured, however, that the authorities were aware of such developments.
