Unknown thieves, believed to be Islamist terrorists, have attacked a truck and looted goods destined for the victims of Tropical Cyclone Chido, in Metuge district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
The truck belonged to the World Food Programme (WFP) and it aimed at supplying essential goods to the victims of Chido, which hit Cabo Delgado and Nampula in December, causing the death of at least 94 people.
According to Salesio Paulo, the Metuge district administrator, interviewed by Radio Mozambique, before they attacked the truck, the criminals had carried out acts of terror in the communities of Nacopo and Nicavo.
“We would like to express our concern at the behavior shown by some of our resident children, who, motivated by a spirit that is contrary to the wellbeing of the population, have disturbed and robbed vehicles that are travelling to this area to provide assistance to those affected”, he said.
Paulo explained that work is under way in order to identify the criminals who attacked the truck, jeopardizing the lives of those who were affected by Chido.
“We will continue to work together with local structures to identify the perpetrators so that they can be neutralized and held accountable”, he said.
