Speaking on the occasion, Filipe Nyusi highlighted the need for good coordination among the troops. “The forces have already guaranteed that they will work in harmony. There is no place for lack of coordination. We appeal, once again, to the forces involved for greater coordination, communication, discipline and respect for human life. Strengthen your relations with the populations through humanitarian aid, whenever possible,” the Mozambican president said.
President Nyusi took the opportunity to thank the SADC for its engagement. “Mozambique and the entire region have great expectations of your actions. You are heroes. As the Government of the Republic of Mozambique, we will spare no efforts to ensure the restoration of peace and security,” he said.
The head of state also addressed a message to Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS), and asked for guaranteed levels of morale in service of the nation’s interests.
The SADC Standby Force thus went into action today in the Northern Operational Theatre, which comprises the northern districts of Cabo Delgado province, plagued by terrorism since 2017.
Since 2017, terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado have cost more than 2,000 lives and displaced more than 800,000.
