Permanent houses are to be built at the Corrane displaced persons’ resettlement centre in Nampula, where, in a first phase, more than 700 families were accommodated in tents.
Smiles had been rare among resettlement centre residents, harried from one region to another by the armed violence that forced them from their homes, losing everything and cast into dire poverty.

But life is regaining some of its meaning in Corrane resettlement centre, Meconta district, Nampula, where unremitting tales of tragedy are giving way to more hopeful narratives.
When the resettlement centre was founded, families were assigned tents for temporary shelter. The construction of temporary houses followed, and now 500 permanent houses are beginning to be built.
The National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction Management (INGD) is relying on non-governmental partners for the materialisation of the project, with the re-settlers themselves providing the labour for construction.

Nampula currently hosts more than 64,000 people displaced from Cabo Delgado, of whom only a small part have been resettled. Many live with relatives, often in situations of absolute poverty.
The United Nations Refugee Agency is involved in the humanitarian mission, never easy, of rebuilding lives destroyed by terrorist violence.
