The connection between Maputo province and the rest of the country is under threat due to the sharp rise in the levels of the Incomáti River in the Incoluane area.
This is due to the heavy rains that have been recorded upstream, causing the waters to be about to reach the platform of National Road Number One (N1) in this region, which separates Maputo and Gaza.
Óscar Sibia, director of the Incomáti Basin Management Division at the Southern Water Regional Administration (ARA-Sul), told “Notícias” that the situation has left homes and agricultural fields flooded in the Magude district and authorities are monitoring the situation while also assessing the damage.
Meanwhile, data from the ARA-Sul Hydrological Bulletin indicate that the Maputo basins, on the Western Border, Madubula, Limpopo, Combomune, Chókwè and Sicacate continue to record oscillating levels, remaining above the alert.
He also mentions that an increase in the hydrometric level was recorded in the Limpopo basin, while in Macarretane it remained below the alert.
For the next 24 hours, the current hydrological scenario is expected to continue, characterized by rising levels in the Maputo, Incomati and Limpopo basins, due to upstream runoff and locally recorded rainfall.
In this context, ARA-Sul appeals to the population to take precautionary measures when going to the Maputo, Incomáti and Limpopo rivers, at risk of being swept away by the force of the water. Likewise, it calls for permanent monitoring of the hydrological information disseminated by the competent entities.
