Health sector actors in Tete province, in coordination with the police, have seized medications valued at more than 30,000 meticais (US$415) from a gang composed of four persons. The medicines, poorly kept and lacking any prescription, were about to be sold on the black market in Tete.
The four individuals, who were stealing medicine from National Health System health units in the province, are being held in the District Command of Marara, and have reportedly admitted the offence.
Director of District Health and Social Services in Marara, Maria Xavier, said the drugs seized included azithromycin, amoxicillin, chlorpheniramine and anti-malarials, all belonging to the National Health System.
PRM spokesperson Feliciano da Câmara said that police were considering the possibility that the gang was led by individuals with technical knowledge of health, and that an investigation based on that hypothesis was in progress.
This is the third time that the accused have vandalised health unit pharmacies in Tete to steal drugs.
