Terrorist groups on Wednesday morning attacked a position of the Mozambican defence and security forces in the “Fifth Congress” village, in Macomia district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, according to a report in Friday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”.
Placed in the village was one of the recently created “Independent Commando Units” of the Mozambican armed forces (FADM), but the attackers entered the village in large numbers, and the commando unit retreated.
One of its members, however, fell into the hand of the jihadists, who not only beheaded him, but also cut off his arms and legs and scattered parts of the dismembered corpse across the village. “Mediafax” has had access to photographs of this atrocity, and described them as utterly gruesome.
At much the same time, another FADM unit, also in Macomia, came under terrorist attack. A statement issued by the self-styled “Islamic State Central African Province” claimed responsibility for the attacks.
A Wednesday note from the Ministry of the Interior, issued via the Cabo Delgado provincial command, confirmed the attack, and the beheading. The man who died was a trainee police officer, normally stationed in the neighbouring province of Niassa, but who had been seconded to the Sixth Independent Commando Company as a patrolman.
Local sources told “Mediafax” that Mozambican and South African troops have been involved in fierce clashes against the islamists in the zone of the Fifth Congress village. Macomia district used to house one of the main terrorist bases, recently dismantled by the FADM and its allies. It was believed that terrorist leader Bonomade Machude Omar used to live in this base.
The paper’s sources also fear that the terrorists may have recently received reinforcements from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
