Islamist terrorists have released the dozens of fishermen that they kidnapped last Friday, in Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
The kidnapping took place when the fishermen were surprised by the terrorists who were travelling in two motorboats. The terrorists surrounded the fishermen while firing into the air. They also seized three boats from the fishermen.
According to the permanent secretary of the Mocímboa da Praia district, Benjamim Isaque, cited in Friday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the victims were released on Tuesday by the terrorists without a clear explanation.
“After three days, the 56 fishermen have been released. They weren’t treated badly by the insurgents, they didn’t lose any property and they are now living with their families. The situation in the district is under control, and the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) are carrying out their investigations. The movement of goods and people continues”, he said.
He explained that since the case took place on an island, “we can’t go into too much detail at the moment about the situation there, but overall control is total.”
