Islamist terrorists killed two Mozambican soldiers on Tuesday, in an attack in Nangade district, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, reports Friday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Carta de Mocambique”.
According to the paper’s sources, the surprise attack took place in Mandimba village, in the far north of the district. There was a position of the Mozambican defence and security forces nearby, and the clashes lasted for several hours.
In addition to the two dead, four soldiers were injured. It is not yet known whether the terrorists suffered any losses.
Nangade district has become a flashpoint in the Cabo Delgado battleground. On Wednesday, the jihadists attacked Nambedo village where they killed one person.
There have been repeated threats to attack the district capital, Nangade town. Although so far none of these threats have come to anything, they have been enough to scare many people into abandoning the town.
The paper also reported that the police have arrested a 68 year old veteran of Mozambique’s independence war, found in illicit possession of an AK47 assault rifle and 60 bullets. He was also carrying ammunition clips, knives and assorted military uniforms.
The spokesperson for the Niassa Provincial police command, Mirza Magaunda, said the man was arrested near the border between Majune and Mandimba districts, and was also in possession of an unspecified amount of cannabis.
The police did not say where the man had come from or where he was going to, but Magaunda said an investigation is under way.
The military equipment was seized at a time when there are fears of increased violence in Niassa, notably ambushes on the roads, which the police have so far blamed on criminal gangs and not on terrorism spilling over from Cabo Delgado.
