Islamist terrorists have kidnapped 60 fishermen, in Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, according to Wednesday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique.’
According to the paper, citing local sources, the kidnapping took place last Friday, when the fishermen were surprised by the terrorists who were travelling in two motorboats. The terrorists surrounded the fishermen while firing into the air.
They also seized three boats that had been in possession of the fishermen.
“One boat arrived here in the village on Friday night, but the others didn’t arrive. It’s not possible to say how many fishermen have been kidnapped, but we believe that there are many. The number could be as high as 60 fishermen because each boat carries more than 20”, said Abudo Hassan, one of the sources.
According to the same source, the relatives of the kidnapped fishermen are deeply worried.
“In recent times, with the return of the families to the town of Mocímboa da Praia, the fishermen have reintroduced night fishing. It was during this period that they were captured”, said another source, Bacar Nchamo, who had a cousin among those kidnapped.
The paper also says that the case has been reported to the administrative authorities and to the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS), who are operating in the region with help of the Rwandan forces.
