A group of Islamist terrorists on Saturday blocked national road number 14, which links Montepuez district to Pemba, capital of the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, and set two vehicles on fire.
According to Monday’s issue of the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the road was blocked and barricades were set up from Saturday afternoon until early Sunday morning. After the vehicles were burnt, the terrorists kidnapped the drivers and took them to a place so far unknown. No fatalities have been reported.
According to local reporters, the barricades were set up near Nanjua locality, between the districts of Ancuabe and Montepuez.
“They intercepted some vehicles that were heading for the Montepuez district and demanded money as a condition for each vehicle to continue its journey. That’s why we’re warning people travelling from Montepuez to Pemba and vice versa that the situation isn’t good”, a source said.
“The situation is not good at all, my aunt left Pemba and thank God she arrived, but she had to pay money”, said another source.
The blockade of the Pemba-Montepuez road forced many drivers to give up their journey and others to spend the night along the road, as a way of saving fuel, which is still scarce at the main petrol stations in Cabo Delgado.
This Monday, according to the paper, the movement of people and goods has resumed although there has been no intervention against the bandits by the Mozambican forces and their Rwandan allies.
