Islamist terrorists marked New Year’s Eve by attacking three villages in Muidumbe district in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, according to a report in Tuesday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”.
During the raids, against Nampanha, Namande, and Namacule villages, at least five people were killed, two of whom were beheaded, and several houses were burnt down.
The local militia reacted promptly, avoiding any greater damage. Heavy fighting was reported between the militia (known simply as “local forces”) and the jihadists.
The attacks began at about 18.00 on Saturday. According to a report in a second newssheet, “Carta de Mocambique”, the raiders managed to occupy Nampanha and Namande on Sunday. Many residents fled from these and nearby villages to the town of Mueda.
