Islamist terrorists on Saturday for the first time attacked the district of Namuno in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, according to a report in Monday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”.
The jihadists entered the district at about 08.00 on Saturday morning and were spotted at Murrumeia, a village on the border with the neighbouring district of Chiure.
Perhaps the most alarming aspect of this incursion was that the raiders arrived in a stolen police vehicle and called a public meeting. According to a local source, cited by “Mediafax”, they were dressed in Mozambican police uniforms, doubtless to convince the villagers that the supposed police meeting was genuine.
But the disguise was not foolproof. Some sharp-eyed villagers noted that among the newcomers, some had torn uniforms, and some were wearing flip-flops rather than military boots. They contacted the District Administrator who confirmed that no public meeting addressed by the police was scheduled for that day.
The administrator contacted the local command of the defence and security forces who confirmed that the group consisted of terrorists. The villagers were urged to leave the spot of the supposed meeting, but the jihadists were already there, and in the ensuing confusion, several people were shot dead as they tried to escape.
Two of those murdered were the village head and his wife, who were both beheaded. The report did not give the full number of the dead. The jihadists also set fire to homes, a school and a tractor belonging to a local farmers’ association.
Cabo Delgado is divided into 17 districts. With the Saturday raid on Namuno, 14 have now come under attack. The only districts that have not suffered incursions are Balama, Mecufi, Montepuez and the provincial capital, Pemba.
