Sérgio Cipriano, administrator of Mocímboa da Praia district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, has announced the closure of 21 schools as a result of the recent upsurge in terrorist attacks in that region.
According to Cipriano, speaking at a meeting of the Cabo Delgado Provincial Executive Council of Cabo Delgado, in addition to school closures, another problem that is compromising the education sector is the displacement of people from some villages in search of safer places.
“The district school network consists of 60 schools, of which 39 are in operation”, he said, cited by Radio Mozambique. “21 schools are closed because of the constant movement of terrorists in these places, which has caused the population to move to the Mocímboa da Praia district capital, the town of Nango and the villages of Chinda and Mangono”.
“However, pupils from the displaced communities have been integrated into other schools where they have been welcomed”.
In the last five years, over 2,300 classrooms in Cabo Delgado have been destroyed by the terrorists and by cyclones. Many of these facilities have not yet been rebuilt due to a lack of funds, but the provincial government has been campaigning for help from international cooperation partners.
