Mozambique: Terrorism was unleashed “by enemies of Frelimo” – Watch

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi declared on Wednesday that the jihadist terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado has been unleashed by the enemies of the ruling Frelimo Party.

Speaking at a seminar in the southern city of Matola, held to integrate the recently elected local secretariats of Frelimo’s “social organisations” into the Party’s structures, Nyusi warned that the goal of the terrorists is to remove Frelimo from the leadership of the Mozambican state.

Frelimo’s “social organisations” are the Mozambican Women’s Organisation (OMM), the Mozambican Youth Organisation (OJM), and the Association of Veterans of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLN).

Speaking as the President of Frelimo, Nyusi called on the three organisations to focus on their tasks, so as not to give ground to Frelimo’s enemies, including the terrorists. Their main role today, he stressed, is to work for a Frelimo victory in the municipal elections of 2023, and the presidential and parliamentary elections of 2024.

He admitted that some Frelimo members have forgotten why the Party exists. “Economic liberalisation and the adoption of a market economy have led some to forget the main mission of defending the interests of the party and of the people, who are our true boss, and to become more concerned with personal agendas and the agendas of certain groups”.

Actors outside the ranks of Frelimo, he continued, “are seeking to undermine the permanence of our glorious party in leading the destinies of Mozambicans”. Because attempts to hold demonstrations and create disorder “never had the effect of weakening Frelimo and the people, our enemies put together acts of terrorist aggression”.

Nyusi thought it was no accident that the start of terrorist actions, with an attack on police premises in the Cabo Delgado district of Mocimboa da Praia on 5 October 2017, coincided with the end of Frelimo’s 11th Congress.

“When we were applauding the success of our Congress, the terrorists were taking their first steps”, he said.

Nyusi thought the role of the Frelimo social organisations would be fundamental in defeating the Party’s enemies. The three organisations were “the true army in building the victories of Frelimo and of the Mozambican people”.

He stressed that leaders of the social organisations should act selflessly in the interests of Frelimo. “We don’t want people who are proud and complicated”, he declared.
