Ten million Grades 1 to 7 textbooks, out of a total of 16 million ordered for the current school year by the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH), are already in Mozambique, and distribution to the provinces is underway.
Announcing this in Maputo on Wednesday (May 11), MINEDH spokesperson Gina Guibunda also noted that the provinces, upon receiving them, must in turn distribute the textbooks to the districts, and the latter to their respective schools.
It was hoped, she added, that the current batch of ten million books would reach the teaching units by next week.
But, with vessels carrying the textbooks continuing to arrive, the situation continued to evolve.
The MINEDH spokesperson clarified that the Grade 6 textbook, with new content, is also now available. “We are working so that when children return to school for the second term, they will find the long-awaited textbooks in their schools,” she said.
Guibunda explained that some of the 16 million books would be held in warehouses as safety and emergency stock, as has happened every year. In fact, due to the delay in the arrival of textbooks for the present school year, the education sector had resorted what books it had in storage.
“It is true that the amount of material left in the warehouse is limited, but it was of some use, and allowed classes to continue normally. Teachers were also instructed to use content from previous years’ textbooks,” she said.
Guibunda explained that the several factors had contributed to delays in the textbooks’ delivery, including Covid-19 pandemic, which had adversely impacted production, and transport too, there being a global shortage of containers.
She vouched however that the delay had not affected the course of the classes, as the curriculum was designed in such a way that the first six weeks were reserved for revising subject material from previous grades.
