Teachers from seven secondary schools in Chimoio district, Manica province, have once again suspended classes, demanding overdue overtime payment from 2023, 2024, and even from part of this year.
The strike, expected to last 30 working days, comes at a critical time, as exams for the 9th, 10th and 12th grades approach.
Domingo reporters learned that seven secondary schools have closed their doors, namely Eduardo Mondlane, Mussarife, Tembwe, Vila Nova, Soalpo, Fepom and 7 de Abril.
Ivan Otávio, representative of the teachers at Eduardo Mondlane Secondary School, said that, without the settlement of the outstanding payments, final exams would be jeopardised.
“This is a strike officially communicated to the education sector. We want to receive all the money owed and for overtime payments to be respected,” Otávio said.
Meanwhile, students from these schools have expressed concern about the impact the strike may have on their academic performance and the completion of the school year.
