At least 569 cases of tuberculosis have been reported this year in Chibuto district, in Gaza province. The figures represent an increase of 109 cases compared to the same period last year, when 460 patients were registered.
The district director of Health, Women and Social Action, José Morona, attributed the increase in cases to the improvement in diagnostic capacity, which in turn increased from three to nine health units with tuberculosis screening capacity this year.
Morona also revealed that the current tuberculosis cure rate in the district is 96%, while two percent of patients abandon treatment.
To control the spread of the disease, health authorities are actively searching for patients who have abandoned treatment, with the aim of reintegrating them into therapy and preventing new infections in that part of the country.
