The district of Pebane, province of Zambézia, central Mozambique, exported just over 372,000 tons of ilmenite between 2020 and 2022, as a result of the growth in the exploitation of heavy sands in the centre of the country.
The main destination of this resource was the Chinese market, which became the largest buyer.
These numbers were achieved through the execution of the Tazetta Resources project, which has been exploiting ilmenite and zircon in Quichanga since March 2019.
The figures feature in the company’s latest annual reports, to which ‘Notícias’ has had access.
These numbers demonstrate the potential that exists in Pebane, which opens up space for further growth in the sector.
In 2020, ilmenite exports reached 102,900 tons, increasing more than 30 tons in 2021 to 138,100 and to 132,000 tons in 2022.
In the first year, monthly production was 9,000 tons, in 2021 around 11,000 tons and in 2022 9,000 tons.
Conclusively, the results then pointed to 367,735 tons of ilmenite exported and 32,255 of zircon in the three years under analysis.
It is predicted that the volume of production will increase, contributing to the consolidation of the sector, with the potential to attract new partners.
The execution of this project is also expected to contribute to the development of the district.
Ilmenite is used in the manufacture of titanium dioxide and titanium metal pigment.
Titanium dioxide pigment has high opacity and bright whiteness, and is used in paints, paper and plastic.
Tazetta Resources is a single-member limited liability company, whose main corporate purpose is to carry out prospecting, exploration, production, processing and marketing of mining products.
With an estimated lifespan of 15 years, the Pebane heavy sand project is the result of an investment of US$16 million by Russian investors.
