Diverse products valued at around 55 million meticais and including cell phones, advertising material and medication, were seized last week in Nampula on the grounds of tax evasion.
The seizure of goods was carried out by the Tax Authority (AT) during routine inspections of commercial product transport, a communique from Mozambican Customs explaining that the driver of the goods did not have documentation certifying their origin.
Investigations revealed the goods came from Malawi and were destined for the city of Nampula, where they would have been offered for sale without paying the import tax charges due.
The AT announced that it had drafted a statement of seizure of assets and the goods had been deposited in the institution’s auction warehouse, while the truck driver concerned had been arrested.
The process is following legal procedures within the Attorney General’s Office and the Customs Court at provincial level.
