Mozambique hopes to produce 422,000 tonnes of marine products in 2019, with the artisanal fishing sector being the largest contributor. The Ministry of Fisheries made the forecast in the Economic and Social Plan for 2019, with the level of fish catches foreseen representing an increase of around 6 percent compared to 2018.
“In artisanal fishing, the contribution of sea fish with a production of around 236,000 tonnes stands out, representing a growth of 10 percent, as a result of the motorisation of vessels”.
In commercial fishing, the tuna catching fleet is expected to increase by 10 percent, with a production of 1,000 tonnes.
Fishing contributes about 4 percent to Mozambique’s gross domestic product.
