Mozambique: Swimming coach dies in wall collapse at Zimpeto Olympic pool

National swimming coach Frederico dos Santos died on Saturday when the front wall of the Zimpeto Olympic pool collapsed in high winds.
The incident occurred around 7.00pm as the coach, swimmers of Maputo Tubarões swimming team and family members were leaving the pool.
Ten other people were injured, including athletes and family members who were in the parking area when the accident occurred. The victims, four of them in serious condition, were evacuated to Maputo Central Hospital.
Youth and Sports Minister Alberto Nkutumula and Health Minister Nazira Abdula went to the scene shortly afterwards to establish what had happened.
Visiting the site, the president of the Mozambican Swimming Federation, Fernando Miguel, said that he never suspected the building quality of the wall.
All activities at the pool have been suspended and a commission of inquiry set up to ascertain the causes of the collapse.
