The Swedish government is to provide $1 million (€843,000) to boost assistance to vulnerable families in Gaza and Inhambane provinces in southern Mozambique, an official source said on Wednesday.
The amount is designed to support the assistance of vulnerable families from 13 districts of the two provinces, a note from the Ministry of Economy and Finance distributed to the media said.
The initiative, which has the support of the United Nations, is part of the Mozambican government’s strategies to ensure the resilience of vulnerable families to climate change.
Between the months of October and April, Mozambique is cyclically hit by cyclonic winds from the Indian Ocean and floods originating in the watersheds of southern Africa.
In December 2019, seven districts in the northern Cabo Delgado province were isolated due to the collapse of a bridge over the Montepuez River during the rainy season.
The 2019/2020 rainy season caused the death of 54 people due to natural disasters (mainly lightning and flooding), and affected about 65,000 people, many with flooded homes, according to data from the National Institute for Disaster Management.
