Sweden has donated around US$90 million (€81 million) since 2022 to social development programmes in the province of Niassa, in north-western Mozambique, it was announced today.
“We are building a holistic programme with the authorities and partners, primarily with civil society, to find various solutions to the problems that exist in the province,” said the Swedish ambassador in Maputo, Mette Sunnergren, during a meeting with local authorities in that province.
According to Sunnergren, the funding was applied in areas such as economic and social development, gender equality, as well as the sustainable use of natural resources, among others.
Secretary of State for Niassa Silva Levone thanked Ambassador Sunnergren for the support and reiterated the need for “unity” to combat forced marriages in the province, which “still remain a cause for concern”.
