The Mozambican government has suspended graphite extraction in a concession in Niassa province, northern Mozambique, operated by Chinese company DH Mining Development, due to lack of appropriate documentation, the authorities have announced.
“The mining company has not yet submitted the documents related to the environmental impact study. In addition, public consultations with the local community have not yet been carried out,” the newspaper Notícias quotes Izidine Opressa, interim provincial director of Mineral Resources and Energy, as saying.
Opressa pointed out that it is essential that communities living within the 11,000-hectare mining concession be consulted, as this will define the terms of resettlement.
Opressa added that community consultation and the selection of the company that will carry out the environmental impact study necessary for the resumption of graphite extraction are due to take place soon.
DH Mining Development is also preparing for construction of a residential complex to accommodate 100 workers.
Graphite reserves in Nipepe are estimated at about five million tons, of which 50% is pure grade. Average annual production at the mine may be as high as 80,000 tons over a 27-year span.
